What is the best way to discuss hearing loss with a loved one?

Has your partner, parent, or friend seemed agitated when you suggested their hearing wasn't great?

If you have a loved one who is showing signs of hearing loss, such as asking you to repeat yourself, turning up the TV volume, or avoiding social situations, you may want to talk to them about it and encourage them to seek help.

Talking to your loved one about hearing loss can be challenging, but by following these tips, you can have a constructive and compassionate conversation:

  • Choose the right time and place. Don't start the discussion when they're busy or distracted.
  • Pick a quiet and comfortable setting, and make sure you have enough time to have a good chat.
  • Be empathetic. Show them that you care. Use "I" statements instead of "you" statements to share your observations. For example, say "I noticed that you have trouble hearing me on the phone" instead of "You can't hear me on the phone".
  • Focus on the benefits of hearing better, rather than the negative aspects of hearing loss. Discuss how hearing better can improve their quality of life, health, and happiness.
  • Offer help and encouragement. Don't pressure your loved one. Respect their choices and preferences, but also gently nudge them along the way. Accompany them to the clinic. Praise their efforts and celebrate their achievements.

Don't ignore hearing issue and hope that they will get better on their own. The sooner you get onto it, the better your health outcomes will be and life will be more enjoyable too! We hope to hear from you soon!
